May I translate the STUDENT WORKBOOK into my language for students learning English?
We are occasionally asked for permission to translate the Student Workbook into other languages for student use in schools. You may translate our Student Workbook into another language. No additional authorization is necessary.
However, there is a better alternative which would require less work, and would be more useful to the students. Because we feel it is valuable for students to know the meaning of the English words and sentences in their own language, we encourage them to look up unfamiliar words in a dictionary before they begin studying each lesson. We also encourage them to read the Lesson Text in their own language in order to understand the meaning of the story.
Therefore, we think a vocabulary dictionary with tables would be more helpful to the students than a translation of each page of the Student Workbook. It would also require far less work. We suggest the following sections:
In the first section, translate the Vocabulary page from Lesson 1. List the English words in English alphabetical order with a translation in your language after each word. It may be helpful to students who speak no English to have the short vocabularies for Exercise 1.1 Vocabulary and Exercise 1.2 and 1.3 Vocabulary translated just as they are shown on the Vocabulary page so they can begin the first exercise without studying all of the vocabulary for Lesson 1.[1]
In the second section, translate all of the sentences in
the first lesson. Open each page on Lesson 1 by clicking the

on each page.[2]
In the third section, translate all of the vocabulary words for all 16 lessons. This section will include all of the words in Vocabulary for Lessons 1-16. You may also download the Vocabulary word.doc from the website or use the same copy and paste technique to produce a word.doc page containing the entire vocabulary.
You may add additional sections as you want. We suggest a section which would translate some common English verbs to illustrate the English meaning of the tenses and persons. You would want to include some of the verbs listed in the Common Irregular Verbs table in the back of the Student Workbook such as to be, to do, to have, and to go. Also include some common regular verbs which you can copy and paste from early lessons. This table of Common Irregular Verbs is also available in word.doc format.
Also look at the Table Index in the back of the
Student Workbook for
specific tables you may want to translate. You can find the
same tables on the Home Page
listed as individual HTML tables which you can copy
and paste. Open each table by clicking the

on each page. The first table in each chapter is:

[1] There is a simple way to copy each Vocabulary page. Open the page on the website, drag your mouse over all of the words you want to copy, click copy, and then paste it to a word.doc page. Use this same technique on any website (HTML) page you want to copy. Back
[2] You will need to translate the sentences only once. There are four exercises in Lesson 1 in which the same sentences are repeated in both the "Listen to the example" and the "Repeat each sentence" sections. Back
