18.  General Troubleshooting

  1. How do I make a CD which will work in both an mp3 player and a computer?   If you make a CD according to the instruction given in Make a CD of the entire course, the same CD will work in both your computer and in an MP3 player. You may also want to print the time chart so you can easily locate the lessons on your MP3 player.

  2. Why are there so many ZIP files to download?   The Spoken English Learned Quickly course was designed so that it would be easily accessed anywhere in the world with even the most basic internet connections. Many of our visitors still use dial-up connections. Consequently, the downloadable course was designed so that everything could be done with dial-up service. That required a large number of ZIP folders in order to keep each folder at no more than 4MB. This was especially true for the MP3 audio files which contain over 30 hours of recorded exercise lessons.

  3. Is there a simpler way to make the CD than downloading each ZIP folder?   Yes there is. You can directly access an ISO IMAGE file which will download the entire CD to a folder on your computer. Then, you will only need to burn that folder to a CD in order to have the entire website. However, the 334M file requires a high-speed modem. See Download free lessons from www.FreeEnglishNow.com.

        If you use the ISO IMAGE link, you will save it to a folder on your computer. However, when you burn the CD, do not place the folder in the CD, but open it so that the individual files and folders are on the CD. See the instructions link for that information.

  4. Is it possible to prepare a CD with synchronized audio and PDF text?   Yes. Make the CD from the Make a CD of the entire course page. You can also download both the audio and PDF text from the Downloadable TXT, PDF and MP3 Files table.

        When a PDF document is open, click on either the or link for the audio.

  5. How do I download the index.html file?   Download it from the Make a CD of the entire course page. (See paragraph number 3.)

  6. Can I download a page directly from the website?   Yes.  1) Open the page and select VIEW SOURCE from the tool bar. (Your tool bar may use a different name depending on the web browser you use.)   2) Highlight the entire page. (Use CONTROL A.)  3) Open a blank TXT (notepad file) page and paste the entire page from our website into the notepad page.  4) Retitle the page exactly as the page you are copying. Be certain to include the extension used on the page (html). Before it will allow you to change txt to html, it will warn you that changing the extension may make the page unstable. Ignore the warning.

    Important Note: If you cannot download the index.html file as suggested in question #5 above, try using this method:

        If the page uses graphics, you must also copy each graphic and save it to the same folder in which you place the page you copied from the website.  1) Right click on the website page graphic. Select the option Save Picture As . . .  2) Paste the picture in the folder.   3) The new graphic will usually include a copy number in the picture name. For example, our home page has a FREE BOOK graphic. If you copied that graphic, it might title it freebook[1].gif. The new title includes [1] which means that it is copy number 1. You must remove the [1] so that the graphic has the name freebook.gif.

        If the graphic does not open when the graphic and the file are in the same folder, you will need to determine if the graphic is in a folder. Use CONTROL F to find the name of the graphic in the page you copied. If there is a folder name separated by a slash (/) before the name of the graphic, you must create a new folder with that name in your file and put the graphic in the folder.

  7. Can I download an audio file directly from the website?   It is unnecessary. All audio files are downloadable from the Downloadable TXT, PDF and MP3 Files page.

  8. If I am selling CDs, what is the best way to save the entire SELQ course?   We suggest that you save everything you want to place on a CD in a single folder on your computer. It is faster to burn a CD from a computer folder than from a master CD. More importantly, it is easier to update a folder on your computer than to update a master CD. Most people selling Spoken English Learned Quickly on CDs will sell one CD containing the entire course (Make a CD of the entire course). This page will give you two options: 1) If you use a dial-up connection, it will show you how to download a series of ZIP files which are manageable with dial-up. 2) If you have a high-speed internet connection, it will show you how to make a simple download using an ISO IMAGE to create the CD.

  9. Can I update a CD when you add new languages to your home page?   Yes. You would want to upgrade both the home page (see paragraph 5) and the actual language pages using the method described in paragraph 6. However, we suggest that you update a folder on your computer rather than updating an actual CD. paragraph 8

        We added special hidden notations on our home page index.html file to make this easy for you. When you go to the VIEW SOURCE file from your web bar, you will see the hidden text notations,

    <!-- = = = = = ++++ START CUT AND PASTE LANGUAGE UPDATE SECTION +++ = = = = = -->

    (all language sections are contained in this space)

    <!-- = = = = = ++++ STOP CUT AND PASTE LANGUAGE UPDATE SECTION +++ = = = = = -->

    Copy and paste everything between these two hidden notations from the current index.html found on the website to your own CD index.html.

  10. How can I find the individual lessons when I am using a CD in an MP3 player?   Print the Time Chart. It will give you the address of each exercise. The Time Chart uses the MP3 audio files which are downloaded from the Make a CD of the entire course page.

  11. Can I make a CD with only American or only British accent lessons?   If you want only an American accent, you would use only the links on the Downloadable TXT, PDF and MP3 Files page. If you want only a British accent, you would use only the links. However, the fastest way to download the entire course is to use the ISO IMAGE files if you have a high-speed internet connection. If you download the entire course with the American    accent   FreeEnglishA.iso  (334M), it will works as an American-accent-only CD. However, the British accent    supplement FreeEnglishB.iso  (283M) contains only MP3 audio files and is not intended to be used as a British-accent-only CD. However, you could make a CD with only British accent by removing all of the American accent MP3 files after the two ISO files are downloaded to your computer.

  12. How can I download MP3 audio files?   Use the and links on the Downloadable TXT, PDF and MP3 Files page.

  13. How can I download PDF and TXT text files?   Use the links on the Downloadable TXT, PDF and MP3 Files page. You may also print the complete Student Workbook.

  14. How can I avoid wasting CDs when I am making a Spoken English Learned Quickly MASTER CD?   Many CD burners have three options:   1) MAKE AN EXACT COPY (which exactly duplicates another CD),   2) MAKE A MUSIC DISC FROM ANOTHER CD (which should make a CD which cannot be altered), and   3) MAKE A DATA DISC (which allows new files to be written [or over-written] on an existing CD). When you are making a MASTER CD for Spoken English Learned Quickly, always use the DATA DISC option. If the CD does not work properly (usually because it will not open on auto run), you can add either a new file or a corrected file with the same name later by over-writing the incorrect file. After the CD works correctly, you can then either copy the CD to make new CDs, or you can update the folder on your computer so that you can make CDs from the folder on your computer.

  15. How do I get a Spoken English Learned Quickly CD to open automatically?   There are several answers:

  16. Can I advertise my own CD sales on the home page?   Yes. See the home page we provide for those selling our CDs. Your advertisement will replace our own links on the home page which tell others they can sell our CDs.

  17. I downloaded an ISO IMAGE file from your website but it doesn't open.   The ISO IMAGE file is a compression file for producing CDs. It works like a ZIP compression file and must be opened in order to work. You must have ISO IMAGE software to open the downloaded ISO file. However, NERO and other CD/DVD burners often include ISO conversion as a part of the bundle. Check your burner software — you may already have ISO software, or you may be able to download it as freeware or shareware. (Google "free iso burner software.")

General Troubleshooting:

  1. Almost all problems which result in a CD opening improperly — or audio and PDF files not opening — are the result of the files and folders not being placed in the appropriate folder. (See Help page 7 and Help page 8 for more information.) If individual folders or files do not open correctly, make certain that the files are in their correct folder. Also make certain that all folder and file names are spelled correctly. Verify all file HTM or HTML designations since (Save Target As... may eliminate the "l" (L) from "html". You must add an "l" (L) to the extension if it was included in the original file name. In addition, Save Target As... may add a "[1]" indicating that it is "copy number 1."  For example, the file name ls2eb.mp3 may become ls2eb[1].mp3. Remove any "[1]"s ([one]) from file names. In the download procedure to burn a CD described on this page, the index.html file is the only file (rather than ZIP folder) which is downloaded independently. In duplicating a CD, much of the concern of this paragraph will be limited to the single index.html file. However, all of the files are independently downloaded from the Downloadable TXT, PDF and MP3 Files table. Special care will be required to prevent this problem from occurring in downloading these individual files.

    Note: In order to simplify Handheld texting downloads which are used in high volume, all files are open rather than grouped into folders. For example, if the lesson audio files were placed in a folder called "MP3," a Handheld user would need to text http://www.freeenglishnow.com/mp3/ls5a.mp3 rather than the shorter http://www.freeenglishnow.com/ls5a.mp3 to access the same file.
  2. If you are making a CD which you want to open automatically, autorun.inf and launch.exc files must be included to automatically open the CD. If the launch.exc file will not download from the www.FreeEnglishNow.com website, you may download a free copy from www.nu2.nu. After the ZIP folder has downloaded, you may open it and use just the launch.exc file. If you also need to use the autorun.inf file from the download, you must open it (double click on the file) and rewrite it to read "[autorun] open=launch.exe "[name of file].html"". For example, if you want to open on the index.html file, the autorun entry must read "[autorun] open=launch.exe "index.html"".

  3. The CD designed for the Spoken English Learned Quickly course fits on a standard 700MB disc. If your burner gives an alert that there is too much material, 1) make certain that the disc is empty, 2) make certain that you have not copied more material than is required for the CD, or that you have not tried to load any of the downloaded ZIP folders to the CD (you cannot combine the material from an open ZIP folder and an original ZIP folder itself as it would duplicate the content), and 3) make certain that you have not copied other files (or folders) which are not part of the Spoken English Learned Quickly downloaded course.
